In this FaCT project, many innovative technologies with technical challenges are actively used in order to provide significant improvements in economic competitiveness, enhancement of safety and reliability, sustainability, and nonproliferation. The work of deciding on the adoption of innovative technologies by the end of JFY2010 is in progress. This paper describes current preliminary assessment results.

Ten times repeated separation experiments with two steps flow sheet using the CMPO/SiO-P and the HDEHP/SiO-P adsorbents, respectively, provided durability of the adsorbents. The chromatograms obtained from the CMPO/SiO-P column showed reproduced profiles through the multi-cycle operations. On the other hand, the time of development and peak shapes of the representative elements for HDEHP/SiO-P column became slower and broader with the number of repeating the procedure due to leakage of HDEHP from the adsorbents.

Separation process for transuranium elements (TRU=Am, Cm, Np and Pu) and some fission products (Sr, Cs and Mo) has been developed at Japan Atomic Energy Agency using new innovative extractants and adsorbents to improve the partitioning process from viewpoints of the economy and the reduction of secondary wastes. Phosphorus-free compounds consisting of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen (CHON principle) were applied to the separation steps for TRU, Cs and Sr by using solvent extraction or extraction chromatography. Mo is separated by adsorption with an iron oxide adsorbent. This paper gives results of the research and development of the separation process.
